A group of small-time philanthropists calling itself the Secret Society of Creative Philanthropy is inspiring acts of nontraditional giving, the New York Times reports.Established five years ago by Courtney Martin, a Brooklyn-based writer, the group distributes $100 each to friends, who, in turn, commit acts of "creative giving" — handing money out on subway cars, publishing the writing of students in a nonprofit literacy program, buying a video camera for a public high school, or leaving $5 bills bearing quotations about giving in public places. Group members are then required to account for how they spent the $100 at a gathering of their peers. While the gifts are not particularly cost-effective, they frequently lead to additional giving.

Some participants donated an additional $100 of their own, creating something of a grassroots ripple effect, and chapters of the group have sprung up in San Francisco and Athens, Georgia. Martin, who said she also gave to traditional nonprofits, told the Times that she saw value in "a visceral engagement with joy and spontaneity, and injecting more of that into our lives.
